About Friday Night, Festival Day 3
Friday night continues the tradition of incredible debuts and once in a lifetime performances. It’s not every day an icon of progressive music performs on the ProgPower stage, but on Friday September 8, 2017, that’s exactly what will happen. We are honored to welcome former Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy. He will headline Friday’s installment of the festival with his all-star band under the name Mike Portnoy’s Shattered Fortress, performing his former band’s “12 Step Suite” on September 8, 2017. The music documents the musician’s battle with alcoholism, and is an ensemble of five songs recorded by the band from 2002 to 2009, with titles that reflect his struggles: “The Glass Prison”, “This Dying Soul”, “The Root Of All Evil”, “Repentance” and “The Shattered Fortress”.
Said Portnoy: “When I came up with the idea of writing a multi-part suite that spanned five Dream Theater albums, (which ended up taking eight years to complete), it was always part of my master plan to perform it in its entirety, live on stage. Unfortunately, after completing the final piece of my conceptual puzzle, I was never able to perform this creation with Dream Theater. Now I’ve decided that I owe it to the fans to finally bring my ’12 Step Suite’ to life on stage as I always had dreamed.”“I’m gonna be playing this with an incredible band of some of the best musicians in prog today, with some great friends, great musicians. We’ve got a lot of cool stuff in store, and I can’t wait to be doing this exclusively at ProgPower 2017. See you there.”
One of the most requested bands fans have been asking for a return performance from is, Tunisia’s Myrath. They will make their long awaited return to the festival after tearing the house down in their U.S. debut back in 2013 in one of the most legendary performances in festival history. ProgPower USA has a history of bringing fans once in a lifetime, exclusive performances and 2017 is no different, as Germany’s Angel Dust will return with their classic line up in a U.S. exclusive. Anyone who was in attendance for their ProgPower appearance in 2001 at ProgPower II can attest to the band’s high energy stage show.Day three is rounded out by a trio of U.S. debuts: Spain’s metal messiahs Lords of Black, fronted by the incredibly talented Ronnie Romero, who was also chosen as the new lead vocalist for Ritchie Blackmore’s new version of Rainbow and Israel’s progressive metallers Distorted Harmony. These are some of the best bands in the metal underground and we are proud to carry on the ProgPower tradition of “bringing the best to the U.S”.
